Spring into the sporting season

For over half my life I was an elite track runner. I had no injures as a child when my body was young and supple, even though I used to train 7 days a week.  I didn’t stretch, I didn’t eat breakfast before I trained, I didn’t drink any water while I trained. I felt awesome and was undefeated over 800m for many years. However, by the time I was 12 years old I couldn’t even touch my toes. It wasn’t until I was 16 I started getting injuries, and when they came, they came thick and fast. I was diagnosed with glandular fever, and then chronic fatigue, amongst a myriad of other health issues. For those of you who have read my book you will know my journey but the point of my story is that you can’t just rely on how you feel to gauge the level of your health. Just because you feel good does not necessarily mean you are functioning optimally.

What would happen if you decided to start seeing a dentist or brushing your teeth only once you could feel pain in your teeth or gums?

What would happen if you decided to put the wrong fuel in your car? Or not to service your car unless it broke down?

They sound like silly questions, but still there is a huge part of the population who only come in to see Health Space practitioners once they are injured, sick or in pain. You may be reading this and think, “Yep that is me”, and whether it’s a conscious choice or you haven’t had the realisation that your health is in your own hands, I challenge you to change your paradigm for you and your family.

Just like you brush your teeth to prevent decay and service your car to ensure it runs optimally, there are certain things you need to do in order to prevent injuries and spinal issues and enjoy optimal health. You only have one body and whilst medicine is advancing at an amazing rate, it’s still better and cheaper to look after the body you have!

To prevent injuries when playing sport, most of us know that it’s important to be hydrated, warm up and cool down (hopefully!), stretch regularly and use good equipment (ideally suited / fitted specifically to your body).

But what a lot of people forget is that you also need to service your body regularly if you want to perform at your best and recover to do it all over again on repeat without getting sick or injured.

This month we are offering all our valued clients the opportunity to refer a friend from your sporting team or your training buddy for a complementary initial chiropractic or physiotherapy consultation. Whether they want an injury prevention assessment, treatment for a current injury or a rehabilitation program to help them perform at their best we have you covered!

At Health Space we pride ourselves on providing an integrated holistic approach, so our chiro’s and physio’s can also help you tweak your nutrition, give you advice about hydration, prescribe orthotics if needed, perform strapping / taping to activate optimal muscle patterns or support injuries and organise a stretch or exercise program for you. They also work with our other amazing practitioners to get you feeling and functioning at your best.
