Low level laser therapy or “cold laser” is a non-invasive and non-drug treatment for nearly all musculoskeletal conditions. There are no known side-effects and it’s painless to receive so patients of all ages are able to be treated and in nearly all cases you can return to your daily activities.
Therapeutic laser therapy is more widely available in the U.S. and Europe and is becoming increasingly popular in Australia where it is used in a range of hospitals and medical clinics. There are decades of research explaining how low level laser works and importantly how it can provide long-term improvement in the underlying condition in addition to more immediate symptom benefits.
When certain wavelengths of light and certain doses are applied to the injured or painful area the light is absorbed and converted into energy. As that energy (ATP) is restored to the cell, oxidative stress is reduced and this instigates the body’s healing response. The scientific mechanism by which this works is well understood and documented.
Some of the conditions laser can treat include:
- Back pain & neck pain
- Knee pain & joint pain
- Nerve pain/ neuropathy
- Sports injuries/muscle tears
- Tennis elbow/epicondylitis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Osteoarthritis/rheumatoid arthritis
Therapeutic laser is painless to receive and you will sit or lie comfortably during treatment. Lasting improvement from laser comes from cumulative treatment so we encourage patients to begin with two treatments per week for two weeks before reassessing. With nearly all patients we quickly move to weekly or fortnightly treatment before a further reassessment. The total number of treatments you require is dependent on many variables including the complexity of your condition, how long you’ve sustained it and so on.
Laser is an adjunctive treatment that can be a standalone therapy or incorporated into a broader program.
Laser treatment is available at the Kings Cross, Rozelle and Bondi junction clinics.
