Here is the thing about headaches.
We have normalized them. You wake up with that dull throb behind the eyes or that tight band wrapping around your skull around 3pm. You sigh, grab a glass of water, and reach for the pill bottle in the desk drawer or the handbag. You swallow the tablet and push through the rest of the day.
We tell ourselves it is just stress, the kids being loud, the screen glare, or just a bad night of sleep. But pain is not a normal state of wellbeing. Headaches are your body’s check engine light.
When the light comes on in your car, you do not put a piece of tape over it and keep driving. You know that ignoring it leads to a breakdown on the highway. Most people think a headache is just a headache, but usually, it is a collision of three factors that we address here at Healthspace Lane Cove.
1. Neural Overload
Your nervous system is stuck in fight or flight mode, running on adrenaline, caffeine, and deadlines. The wires are frayed. When your system is amped, your threshold for pain drops.
2. Mechanical Tension and Text Neck
This is the physical load. It might be forward head carriage from your laptop or chest breathing instead of using your diaphragm. Your neck muscles lock up, the scalenes get tight, and that tension travels straight up.
The human head weighs about five kilos. When you tilt your head 60 degrees to look at a phone (a condition often called text neck), gravity makes that head feel like it weighs 27 kilos. Your neck was never designed to carry that weight all day.
3. Chemical Triggers
This involves hormones, hydration, or even the sulphites in your evening glass of wine.
How to Reduce Headache Tension Today
When you take a painkiller, you are addressing none of these. You are just cutting the wire to the alarm. In our Lane Cove practice, we are seeing this more frequently, and not just with adults. We see it in kids and teenagers too.
Since we are all living on our devices, here are three ways to take the pressure off:
- Bring the world to your eyes. Stop dropping your chin to your chest. When you are on your phone, bring it up to eye level. It looks a bit silly at first, but your neck will thank you.
- Perform the chin tuck. Every time you are at a red light or sitting at your desk, gently pull your chin straight back as if you are making a double chin. This resets the deep stabilizers in your neck and offsets the forward lean.
- Breathe through your nose. When we are stressed and in pain, we tend to breathe through our mouths. This uses the scalene muscles in your neck and creates even more tension. Nose breathing keeps your nervous system calm and your neck muscles relaxed.
Natural Headache Treatment in Lane Cove
Those maybes are a lot of work, huh?
Instead of masking the symptom, we look at the structure. We check if your neck is moving the way it should and if your nervous system is stuck in a sympathetic state. Our multidisciplinary team at Healthspace Lane Cove uses chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy to create a custom plan that addresses your postural issues and muscle imbalances.
You do not need to live with a pack of painkillers in your pocket. You just need to find out what that engine light is actually trying to tell you. Contact us to discuss how our team can help you get back to feeling your best.
