Yoga and Pilates

On Sydney's Northern Beaches

Health Space is proud to sponsor yoga and Pilates classes at Mona Vale Surf Club. Health Space Mona Vale has a long standing relationship with the community and with the surf club specifically. We have a number of yoga traditions and class styles with teachers of many years experience.

Iyengar Yoga

A class for beginners or experienced yogi’s, Iyengar yoga concentrates on the alignment of the pose and holding it for an extended period of time, allowing the body to become familiar with the poses and movements. Iyengar yoga focuses on building strength and structure to the body, allowing us to stand upright. It also assists with increasing flexibility, enabling us to move in a variety of positions and to enhance strength building. Students are invited to learn inversions when they feel “ready”, and are led into poses such as shoulder stands, headstands and handstands. The classes feature regular hands-on adjustments, facilitated by the instructor, to prevent injury and to teach the student correct alignment.

Kids Yoga

A class where real yoga is taught to the future generation of yogis. Children are never too young to start yoga, with classes focused on increasing flexibility, focus, strength, and learning to relax. Children are encouraged to learn about themselves and how yoga can assist them in everyday life, in a fun, relaxed environment. Each class finishes with 10 minutes of savasana (relaxation), so students are able to return home refreshed and calmer.

Pre-Natal Yoga Classes

Pre-natal yoga classes offer expecting mums an alternate and gentle form of exercise that alleviates physical aches and pains. The class is designed to assist mums-to-be with the mental and physical tools needed to ensure a calm birthing process and a smooth transition into motherhood. Yoga equipment such as bolsters and other props are provided to ensure comfortable attendance in class. Note: Mothers-to-be must be at least 12 weeks pregnant to join the class.

Mums and Bubs Yoga

Mums and bubs yoga is an opportunity for new mums to enter back into exercise and movement patterns in a safe, low impact way. The class focuses on helping recent mums rebuild core and pelvic floor strength and tone the abdominal muscles. Babies are entertained through nursery rhymes, baby massage and songs, with the baby often experiencing a sound sleep after the class. Mums and bubs are provided a unique opportunity to bond through this class, with mums still able to take care of their physical and mental health post-birth.

Yoga Therapy (Beginner to Intermediate)

Each class is a tailored, remedial stretch and strengthening class, designed to suit individual goals and needs. The class focuses on caring for lower back and joint health and healing. The classes complement strenuous sporting activities and focus on mobility to relieve muscle stiffness and pain. The classes are taught by an instructor with many years of experience and with a sound background in anatomy and physiology.

Sports Recovery Yoga

Sports recovery yoga is designed to help elite and amateur athletes, weekend warriors and gym junkies to balance out their bodies from the high impact of sport, and the wear and tear on joints and muscles. It assists with increasing flexibility, provides relief from stress and is an opportunity to slow down from the fast paced life. All experience levels are catered for, and students may benefit from the classes with healthier joints, increased range of motion, increased focus and concentration, improved balance and stability, greater core strength, increased spacial awareness, injury prevention and a calmer nervous system.

Pilates targets the deep postural muscles, building strength from the inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. It helps to achieve a longer, leaner and more toned body, will help to improve your posture and is a great way to relieve stress and tension. All levels from beginners to advance Pilate enthusiasts are catered for. Classes vary using various Pilates equipment such as bands, balls, rollers and magic circles. Some additional Pilates disciplines, such as Barre Pilates, may be worked into the classes depending on the instructor.
