Healthy Hot Chocolate

22 May, 2018

Raw cacao (chocolate in it’s unprocessed form) is full of nutritional benefits. It is packed with minerals, especially magnesium, which is essential for many body processes from muscle relaxation to energy production and detox. Cacao is the raw extract of the cacao bean, which is then heated to high temperatures to make cocoa. This process removes all the vitamins and minerals, making it a tasty, bitter treat. Further production to make chocolate adds around 50% processed sugar, milk solids and other additives. The sugar and milk have also been processed, meaning they are devoid of nutrients too.

For some, dairy can be aggravating to their tummies as well, and for all of us, too much sugar can lead to poor health.

So, to have a healthy chocolate treat, why not try this delicious hot chocolate drink made with raw cacao and a natural sweetener. Still full of all the nutrients nature intended and with no added nasties. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of rice or almond milk* (unsweetened)
  • 1 heaped tablespoon of raw cacao powder (not cocoa – this is the processed version with less health benefits)
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp of raw honey (optional, I find it too sweet if I use rice milk)

Directions

Combine all ingredients in a small pot on the stove and heat gently before serving.

*Vitasoy unsweetened or Pure Harvest are both good almond milks without any nasty additives or sweeteners which can make some people feel unwell.
